Knowledge and Attitude of University Student` on Brain Death and Organ Donation

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine knowledge and attitude of university student¡¯ on brain death and organ donation.

Methods: A self-administered questionnaire survey was carried out for 900(male, 459, female, 441) students from 7 universities in Kyungpook from March 3 to April 20 2003. Collected data were analyzed by the ~2-test.

Results: Students¡¯ knowledge of brain death, organ donation and organ transplantation was the lowest. Students¡¯
attitude toward brain death, organ donation and organ transplantation was the highest percent. Brain death was approved
by 59.9% and Students of 74.4% can contribute organ donation. Organ donation percent of women was higher than men
(p<0.05). 92.4% of respondents agreed that organ transplantation can offer a high quality of life to the recipient and is
an acceptable from of medical treatment.

Conclusions: On the consideration of above findings, it is recommended that a nationwide institution responsible
exclusively for brain death and organ transplantation should established. In addition, the heath policy for university student, through various ways such as education, consulting, and program, should be employed. The national health insurance system so that have costly organ transplantation expenses are substantially covered.
